Tap Workshop

Dust off those tap shoes and join us for a Broadway-style tap class that will be fun and energizing.

Level: All Levels

Kristin Brown began her study of dance at the age of three. She had the opportunity to study at dance schools in California and Utah where she learned a variety of dance styles including; ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, hip-hop, and contemporary. She furthered her training in college and received her BA in Dance from Brigham Young University (BYU). While at BYU she was able to perform on the touring company, Contemporary Dance Theatre, and travel with them to India and Colorado. Kristin had the opportunity to work with renowned choreographers Donald McKayle, Diavolo dancers Jenn and Omar Olivas, Jennifer Backhaus, and others.  Kristin received further training at summer intensives including San Francisco Conservatory of Dance, Paul Taylor, and Complexions Contemporary Ballet. She most recently danced on the Utah-based company, SALT Contemporary Dance under the direction of Michelle Nielsen. It was there she was able to work with dancers from North West Dance Project and broaden her artistic abilities. Kristin also loves to teach and choreograph. She is excited to be back in California and to be a member of Avocado Dance Theatre.

INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED HIP-HOP

 Demonstrating hip hop with a fun and challenging experience for the Festival community. Come join the sweat and swag!

Level: Intermediate 

Tina Salas began her fantastic dancing career choreographing to the sounds of her fathers guitar! She has trained with Tabitha and Napoleon of SYTYCD, Culture Shock SD and Jabbawockeez. She has an incredible eye for detail in styling and precision, her gift of developing a student’s potential has been clearly demonstrated in the multiple dancers that she has produced through the years.  Her classes are strengthening, invigorating and demand excellence.


“OLD SCHOOL” RIGOR, HORTON-INSPIRED CONTEMPORARY/MODERN TECHNIQUE

3 – 5:00 PM

Theater Dance Studio

 Beginning with standing exercises to engage and develop the body center, students will then practice clearly defined, efficient movement and approaches. Strongly influenced by classic concepts found in Horton, Graham, Ballet, and Taylor, the class expands to include challenging extended phrases, then moves across the floor with jumps and stretches, and finally choreography encompassing all of the above.

Peter G. Kalivas, Founded his production company, The PGK Project in 1994 – Peter has danced & sang, choreographed, and taught worldwide for more than 30 years including ON BROADWAY as Mr. Mistofelles – the “magical” cat in “CATS” at The Winter Garden Theater/NYC.  He co-choreographed “Kilt” Off-Broadway starring Tovah Felshuh and was featured in productions and tours of: “Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, West Side Story, Jesus Christ Superstar, On Your Toes, A Chorus Line, Oklahoma, Godspell, Pippin, among many others. His choreography has been commissioned by both ballet and contemporary companies throughout the US and abroad and been presented at major festivals worldwide.  Originally from Long Island, New York, Peter is a graduate of The University of the Arts (Dance Major, Music Minor), and trained extensively at The Pennsylvania Ballet, The Joffrey Ballet and The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater School where he was invited to join The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater second company.

Over his career as a dancer he was an original member of Sean Curran Company/NYC originating roles at The Joyce Theater/NYC where he NY Times wrote his interpretations to be “…sublimely executed and spot on matched with exemplary skill, musicality and theatricality that can’t be beat”.  In Europe he was a member of The Iwanson Dance Company and soloist with The Bavarian State Opera Ballet/Munich and guest artist of the London Opera Ballet. His work has been presented at prestigious theaters and festivals worldwide including The Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, The Ailey Citicorp Theater/NYC, Le Festival D’Avignon France, Festival de Cerventino Mexico, Dance Platform Turkey, The State Opera Ballet Theater Almaty Kazakhstan, Stamping Ground Dance Festival Australia, The Disney Lund Theater REDCAT Los Angeles, Florence Gould Hall/NYC among many others.  He is a Fulbright Scholar in Dance Education guest artist at Kyung Hee University Seoul, S. Korea, former faculty at TanzZentrum Conservatory Austria and The Iwanson Tanz Schule Germany and was a performance coach for Cirque du Soleil/Las Vegas.
